The Radon Sector calibrates instrumentation to detect the concentration of radon in the air and the exposure of passive devices so as to measure the concentration of radon in the air integrated over time.

The calibration is performed in a radon chamber that can generate controlled radon atmospheres (STAR), built in compliance with the IEC 61577 standard. The chamber has a volume of 1.89m3; it is therefore possible to calibrate several instruments at the same time and place a large number of passive detectors inside.

The accreditation table includes:

Instruments in calibration
Measuring Measuring range Uncertainty Method/Procedure
Active instruments for measuring the concentration of radon in the air Concentration of radon in the air from 1.000 Bq m-3 to 2.500 Bq m-3
11.0% Calibration in controlled radon atmosphere for comparison with a sample monitor
from 2.500 Bq m-3 to 12.000 Bq m-3 9.0%
Passive devices for measuring the concentration of radon in the air integrated over time Concentration of radon in the air integrated over time from 200 kBq h m-3 to 4.000 kBq h m-3 8.0% Exposure of passive devices in a controlled radon atmosphere
Certificate delivery time: 20 working days from the execution of the measurements

The working conditions in the radon chamber are environmental ones, without the possibility of varying pressure, temperature and humidity. It is not possible to measure balance inside the radon chamber while the environmental dose equivalent rate value for the field inside the radon chamber is measured.

Calibrations:

Standard calibration involves:

-three different levels of radon concentration, covering the entire measuring range. It is possible to request additional levels, as long as they are within the accreditation range;

- an assessment of balance of the instrument in a nitrogen atmosphere;

- data acquisition interval of 60 minutes, unless otherwise specified.

Standard calibration takes about two weeks from arrival of the instrument at the Centre, subject to prior arrangements for shipment. The instrument must be sent to the Centre together with all the power supply cables (or charged batteries) and data transmission cables, the accessories required for its operation, and the software for downloading data.

The maximum accepted dimensions of the instrument are: 40 cm in width, 46 cm in length and 33 cm in height.

Exposure:

Each exposure level has a minimum duration of 60 hours and provides for a minimum degassing period of 72 hours in an environment with a low radon concentration. At the end the devices are sealed in radon-tight bags.

The devices must reach the Centre divided by exposure level, already assembled (ready for use) and in radon-tight bags. In addition, they must be assigned a unique code that is clearly legible and accompanied by a list, showing the various levels of exposure and the codes of each device.

For each exposure it is necessary to send at least one transit device, with a unique identification code and a T, included in the list of devices.

Spare devices can be sent, prepared in the same way as described above.

Additional notes for electrets:

It is recommended to use electrets with an initial charge greater than 500 V and compatible with the required exposure level. For laboratory checks, it is possible to send electrets with an initial charge of less than 500 V, subject to agreement with the Centre when preparing the offer.

The initial charge of each electret must be indicated in the list of devices sent.

Only for the configuration using the L chamber, it is possible to ask the staff of the Centre to assemble the chamber with the detector element. Meanwhile, the assembled device must be sealed in radon-tight bags for the purpose of return.

The value of the environmental dose equivalent rate, due to the radiation field present in the radon chamber, shall be indicated on the calibration certificate.
